Kitsune
Kitsune are a race of fox-like creatures native to Iota. They are very unique in that a specific form of mental magic is passed down through their race: illusion magic. While mental illusion magic is by no means exclusive to Kitsune, it is nowhere near as potent in other races; even the three major Iota races can be fooled by a Kitsune's illusion. They take great pride in that. Their illusiions, unlike others, affect more than just the eyes; they affect every sense imaginable from hearing to balance to pain. Indistinguishable from reality, the only limiting factor is the illusions are unable to alter memories.
It is as rare--if not more so--to encounter a Kitsune than a Fairy for a couple reasons. Firstly, they live in their own figurative and slightly literal universe. Putting each other in illusions, they live in whatever reality they create for themselves. For this reason, they keep to themselves, alone or with any other creature they are forced to exist with in reality. Secondly, the only reason they have to encounter others is to is to place them in illusions and toy with them.
As is typical with mental magic, Kitsune possess no other form of magic. However, Kitsune are naturally capable of taking on a humanoid form, retaining their ears and tails, their tails the only feature identifying them as Kitsune; otherwise, they'd be mistaken for Nekos. Like Fairies, though the existence of Kitsune is considered to be only a myth.
Although their illusions are always incredibly potent, a Kitsune is limited in how many beings or how large of an area they can placce under an illusion. This limit is determined by number of tails a Kitsune has; every Kitsune is born with one tail and can max out at nine. With one tail they can place a single person under an illusion and cover an area about the size of a door. With nine tails, a Kitsune can place everyone in the largest city under an illusion. It is rare for a Kitsune to achieve all nine tails and the process of gaining tails isn't exactly known. Some say it is by age; some say they develope as a Kitsune becomes more crafty with their illusions; others suggest they come about in times of great need or emotional distress
For unknown reasons Kitsune are immortal, immune to aging, whereas even Dragons die of old age. Kitsunes believe this is because of the unique way they carry around their soul. Unlike others, whose soul reside inside them, the Kitsune's soul resides inside a gem they are born with. The color of the gem depends on what minerals the mother felt like eating during pregnancy. Although it is relatively unheard of for this to happen, should someone get their hands on that soul gem, they become immune to that Kitsune's illusions and bascially own that Kitsune for as long as they have the gem--for the further the Kitsune is from their soul gem, the weaker they are. If the gem were to break the Kitsune would die.
